GALLOWAY CONVERSATIONS: Listening to The Land with Dr Paul Clarke
What does it mean to really listen to a place?
Dr Paul Clarke lives and works locally, growing food,
restoring woodland and running gatherings on a small piece of land near Mossdale. He directs Naturally Smart Group CIC, which works in partnership with the World Ecological Civilization Community Foundation (WECCF), exploring ecological civilization in modern life: peace and harmony with oneself, among people, and with nature.
In this relaxed afternoon conversation, Paul talks about what he does and how he does it. His approach is shaped by permaculture, the practice of designing with nature rather than against it, and by the simple habit of paying close attention to one patch of ground, season after season.
Expect plain talk, practical examples and a few surprises: how a garden teaches patience, why waste is a design mistake, and what a woodland can tell you if you sit still long enough.
No prior knowledge needed. Come with questions. There will be plenty of time for open discussion, and Paul is as interested in your experience of this landscape as he is in sharing his own.

Moss Tales – Readings
MossTales — Volume One
Some places keep their stories close.
Galloway is one of them. Moss and moor. Forest and loch. Old tracks that lead nowhere now. Ruins that still remember who lived there.
MossTales gathers the stories this land has held onto and unweaves them from the tendrils of the land.
A healer at the edge of the woods, waiting for the King’s man. A keeper on the grouse moor, who knew the light was failing. A railway line that was closed, and a place that never forgot its presence.
These are tales of ordinary people in a hard, beautiful place. They lived by the weather and the seasons. They were shaped by the land, and they left their mark on it.
Some stories are true. Some are nearly true. All of them grew from the ground they are set on.
This is the first MossTales collection. It is for anyone who has walked a lonely road and wondered who came before.
Tickets to this event are FREE and are available by CLICKING HERE
More stories, and a map of the storyworld, are soon available at mosstales.com
Moss Tales Book Launch
Some places hold more than they let on……..
Mossdale is a small village in Galloway with a loch, a wood, a hall and a welcoming and vibrant community. MossTales is a collection of linked stories set there, and in the ground beneath it.
Come and along to this event to hear Paul read some selected pieces from the collection and talks about how the stories came out of the ground they are set in. There will be time for questions, and copies to buy and sign afterwards.
